Simple physical exams for your pet are a very essential part of preventative care. We may catch something you may not have noticed or may not have realized was of concern. Puppies should receive an exam within a few days of obtaining your pet, any time there is an illness or concern, and if a Health Certificate for travel is required. Older dogs should receive an annual or semi-annual exam or any time there is an illness or concern.
DHLP/Parvo 
Vaccination
Protects your pet from the following four diseases: DISTEMPER, HEPATITIS, PARAINFLUENZA, and PARVOVIRUS. These four diseases are severely dibilitating and can cause death. Puppies should receive two of these 2-4 weeks apart.

This vaccination will be required by most kennels, daycare facilities, and at our hospital for surgery.

After the initial series, this vaccination should be given annually.

Bordatella Given to dogs to prevent TRACHEOBRONCHITIS (commonly known as Kennel Cough). It is both a highly contagious airborne virus and bacterium that causes a dry, hacking cough that persist for six or more weeks. Puppies should receive two of these 2-4 weeks apart.

Lymes Prevents LYMES DISEASE, a very serious disease carried by ticks that can affect both pets and humans.  Puppies should receive one of these annually. 

This vaccination should be given if your pet will be in Wisconsin, Minnesota, or in forest preserves where deer are frequently seen.

Leptospirosis Prevents LEPTOSPIROSIS. Lepto is a zoonotic disease, meaning humans and pets can catch the illness from one another. It is the leading cause of kidney failure in dogs. Puppies should receive one of these annually. Dogs should receive one of these annually.
Rabies Protects against RABIES which can be obtained from the bite of a rabid animal or carrier. This vaccination is required by the State of Illinois for dogs over 4 months of age, and should receive boosters annually.

This vaccination will be required by all kennels, daycare facilities, and at our hospital. Failure to vaccinate your dog could result in it being destroyed if it bites another person or animal.

Heartworm Check A simple blood test to check for the presence of heartworm microfilaria in dogs. Heartworms are fatal if untreated. They are transmitted through infected mosquitos. Puppies who were born before frost should be tested prior to April when it is recommended they begin heartworm preventative. It is recommended that dogs are tested prior to April before beginning monthly heartworm preventative.
Canine Geriatric 
Blood Screen
A comprehensive blood screen that checks function of all major organs, for infection and anemia. N/A Recommended for dogs over 6 years of age. Same blood sample is used for a heartworm check.
Heartworm Preventative As the name suggests, prevents heartworms. We carry two brands: Interceptor (prevents heartworm) and Sentinel (prevents heartworm, fleas, and intestinal parasites). Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitos and is only partially treatable if caught in time. Should be given monthly either year-round or from April to November to puppies over 6 months of age. Should be given monthly either year-round or from April to November.
Fecal Test A semi-annual fecal test to detect intestinal parasite eggs. Deworming is very easy once the parasites are found.  Highly recommended for animals coming from communal situations, such as shelters or pet stores, and then semi-annually to determine if anything has been picked up. Spay/Neuter ALL DOGS NOT INTENDED FOR RESPONSIBLE BREEDING SHOULD BE SPAYED OR NEUTERED. Animals left unaltered have a very high risk of cancers. Also eliminates unwanted puppies, heat cycles in females and roaming/aggression in males. This is recommended for puppies 5-6 months of age. At any age, a dog can be spayed/neutered, but the older the patient, the more risk that is introduced.
Dental Cleaning Simple procedure done with ultrasound scale to remove tartar and plaque accumulation. This can lead to Gingivitis and other infections.  Not usually required the first year. As needed. For many dogs, once yearly.
Microchip A microchip (the size of a grain of rice) is implanted under the skin. It allows your dog to be identified and returned should he be lost or stolen. Highly recommended for all dogs. Can be easily done following spay/neuter. Highly recommended for all dogs. Can be easily done during any other procedure requiring sedation. 
Interocular Pressure Tests the pressure present in the eye. Glaucoma is a painful eye disease that can cause blindness. Early detection is the best defense. N/A Recommended as dogs age. More prevalent in certain breeds.

FVRCP-C Protects cats against diseases associated with upper respiratory infection and FELINE DISTEMPER.  Kittens should receive two of these 2-4 weeks apart.

FeLV Given to cats to prevent FELINE LEUKEMIA. FeLV and its associated diseases are a major cause of death in cats. Kittens should receive two of these 2-4 weeks apart.

A FeLV blood screen should be done prior to giving the first injection.

FIP Prevents FELINE INFECTIOUS PERITONITIS, a terminal viral disease that is difficult to diagnose.  Kittens who go outdoors should receive this vaccination annually.  Cats who go outdoors should receive this annually. 
FIV Mainly for outdoor cats, protects against FELINE IMMUNO-DEFICIENCY virus, which is similar to HIV in humans. Kittens who go outdoors should receive this vaccination annually. Cats who go outdoors should receive this annually.
